There is something to be said for something hot PAF-ish, like 9k or so (yeah, yeah... I know resistance isn't everything in terms of output). Something that doesn't slam your preamp too hard lets it breathe a little and do its thing. A pickup that's too low output makes me feel like the amp is trying to pull and is starving. Even hot single-coils (I call "hot" around 7k) can get the job done well, with the right amp.

Hey man, been watching your videos as of late. I have a question for you and maybe you could even make a video about. I bought 2 Ibanez prestige guitars and took them to the guitar shop to install sets of Duncans in them, the guy called me and said the pole pieces are very long and the only way to make them fit would be to either cutting the excess off or routing the pickup cavity to make it deeper. I decided to cut the excess of the pole pieces off but i’ve been reading around the internet and some people say that changes the tone of the pickup significantly. I don’t know if this is true or not but now I am very curious and I can’t find a reliable source that mentions or have tested this. I am only hoping for my guitars to sound good.

I feel exactly the same about this guitar. I wanted it since 08 and finally got one when they did the rerelease after he passed. The pickup from what i found is the same as the alx model. Just an endorsement strategy.

Beautiful guitar! but at that price point, it should have Stainless Steel frets, hipshot ibby hardtail and a better option of pickups

Man I do the set up as soon as I get a new guitar in my hands, I would be lying if I were to say something about factory setup since it’s been years since last I experienced any of that! On the other hand, this was a really interesting video! Gonna be putting more attention next time I buy a new guitar!

If the coils are balanced, then it won't sound any different at all. If they're slightly unbalanced, the "hotter" coil pointed at a different point in the string scale *may* make it sound different.

Pickups don't change the sound

I have this guitar bought it in 2005 .. paid like €1400 for it!! Still in fairly good nick.

They have been making EMG HZ H2’s forever. They aren’t proprietary to Alexi’s guitars. They are meant to act as an analog to the Jackson J50BC pickup that he used in his Jackson’s and match the values of that pickup very closely. While the ALX set has his name on it, Alexi never had the set installed in any of his guitars and they never came stock in any of his custom shop builds. Alexi used the EMG HZ H4, and later the H2 first with old Jackson electronics in his ESP’s up until the mid 2000’s when ESP developed the MM04, a clone of the active J-1000 circuit in his old Jackson’s. But EMG had no way to sell Alexi’s sound as half of it was an ESP product, so they created their own pickup and boost combination in order to sell a similar (not identical) product.

I used to work for Randall in the early 2000's and I'm guessing the speakers were made by Eminence. I know early Randall was trying to cop Marshall's tone so I think G12T75 or Greenbacks might be a better substitute but if you want Dime's tone you need Jaguars. I personally think Vintage 30's are the most consistent way to get studio-worthy tone. Doug Smith was the head of Randall at that time and alluded to the JCM800 2210 model being the inspiration for the early Randall heads.

How accurate would you say the dime time pickups are to the pickups they're replicating? (I heard you say that the neck pickup in the stealth slime was like a bridge '59, but did you compare it to one?)

Nice edwards, had al128 arrowhead myself 2 years ago. Nice giutar, but: 1- fretboard is painted, yes it looks ultra black but try clean it with dunlop 01, you’l se what it realy looks like. 2- floyd 2000 is same as 1000 3000 etc, colour is different. 3- its kinda 1 trick pony, for cob stuff its grate, but if you try smth other… its just wrong. Fh2 lacks bass and has too much treble(makes it good for lower tunings). 4- e2 are japan-made, edwards are made in china and assembled in japan, e2 has ofr and overall better quality. 5- neck is not wide, just usual esp-ish (i’d say its rather narrow comparing to jackson rr). Overall grate guitar for the price but had to sell it(just cant stand floyds, fh2 is crap for anything other than cob).

Played a mahogany RG with these vs another (older, also mahogany) RG with the V7/V8 and they feel related. Both “sound like mahogany” in their guitars with a relaxed midrange and lots of clarity and a surplus of lows. Fusion Edges seem more refined for the same general sound. Some people think the V7/V8 are what Ibanez thought the JB/‘59 set should sound like. Someone said the bridge and neck Fusion Edge measure the same DCR, implying 2 of the same pickup. This may be the case, but also, the DiMarzio Evolution set is 2 pickups with the same (or, same-ish) DCR, and those are definitely 2 different pickups. So, I wouldn’t be so sure.

I’ve never seen a comparison between the different models used, and I’m really curious as to the difference between the bill Lawrence he used in the neck in the early days, the super distortion and the 59’ bridge. If anyone wants to do some business, contact me because I can totally get edwards, official ESP with letters of authentication etc. Just note, shipping is costly. Also, fire video. I will say that my edwards Pinky is also very cool. I played the ESP one too. There's a difference in feel, but none in sound. I think the ESP ones just are more detailed when they come to the frets and feel. Is it worth the extra 5000 USD for them ? If you want only if you can afford to spare the money, otherwise, you cant go wrong with edwards or E-II

Hey E, I bought a Dime o flage bk in December and it’s such a joy to play!!! Made in Indonesia with V-shaped neck which I absolutely love!! 59 in the neck and Dimebucker in the bridge. The EMGhz is a passive pickup. The pickup is the same in the alexi set. The pickup itself isnt a pickup designed for Alexi. Rather its the standard (and awesome) EMGHZ passive pickup with the gain boost/pre amp being the signature aspect of the set.
